					| What with there being so many different ways for your computer to be attacked (viruses, root-kit, spy-ware, open ports, etc), I was wondering what software people used to protect themselves against it and what other methods they use as well. I'm interested to know if the software was free (or not) and if the reason you use it is because it is free.
I plan on putting a list up of the best software which fulfils the different roles.

					| If I paid, Kaspersky... But I don't, so Comodo firewall pro and avira anti virus. Every now and then I download one of those spyware doctor or whatever it is that people say, and give it a run (A squared is a good one too) - but bugger me, never finds anything other than "tracking cookies"... Simply put, it's great to have protection - but it's never been needed - common sense, as they say

Do you mean crap as in it had security holes, vulnerabilities? Or was it the "defence plus" which is the HIPS, whereby any process/application that runs requires you're permission until it learns what is okay for those processes? It will require you to okay each different location it accesses, or whenever something is updated/changed etc. However, instead of just "okay", make it a trusted application - it asks a lot less then Difference between crap and annoying. You can alter settings, turn off the HIPS - and let it decide what can/can't access the net - basically make it just a bog standard firewall. Personally if I were to have a firewall and nothing else, then why bother with Comodo? Go with windows firewall, it blocks incoming and trusts anything out going. As long as you don't get dodgy things, you'll be fine with that. Comodo can do that if you wish, but why install it for it Argument for crap would be that occasionally, and without any known reason I can find, you can find the comodo cfp.exe process taking up lots of CPU... without being able to stop it. I must admit, that is bloody annoying. Happened about 4 times in 18 months or so.That is crap, but for security? It's excellent, top notch. Don't like something as you find it annoying, then you've got the wrong settings. If you don't want that type of protection, you can disable it. Maybe "crap" could be the fact that some processes should be pre-defined as being secure and fine to execute. I'd kind of agree on that point, but since there are some deemed like this already - I assumed there's a reason some aren't
