Most cooler come with a pre pasted paste which honestly is always crap. Better use Arctic Silver 5 or if you are experienced and have a 100% copper cooler use Coollaboratory Liquid.

don't know if you've ever looked at the comparisons, but there is naff all difference between them. That might change in the long term, but tbh most people change their processors/coolers frequent enough not to worry about it.

Think i might get some paste just in case something goes wrong and I need to put in the old one again.

I have read several tests and made the experience at work and home that there is a big difference in cooling paste. Coollaboratory Liquid Pro is the best to date followed by Arctic Silver 5. On 12V and load there can be a difference up to 15 °C degrees between Coollaboratory Liquid Pro and normal paste.

clearly reading different reviews...

the stuff on the thingy will be fine - it never hurts to have a spare tube lying around, but there is no need (purely on principle) to replace the stuff it comes with. if you want to be taken in by their evil capitalist lies then go ahead

Not going to comment on the comparsion with Toothpaste and Vegemite. If he wants to use normal paste then fine but among geeks it´s common to use better paste.
PS (though it´s german the tables are clearly enough. Standard-Wärmeleitpaste = normal paste).

Fraid you did
Without being able to see the conditions of the test its hard really to comment. Either way, there's no real important difference, a few degrees is not going to.
Also, why would Artic make an awesome cooler, then slap some crap paste on the bottom? Given the actual cost of the cooler compared to the paste?
Of course as everyone knows, the best way to increase performance is to tie a reef knot in the power supply for the fan
PS <-- that's what I'd call standard thermal compound

i suppose it depends on what you will be doing with your cpu.
if you like to overclock a lot and run benchmarks then you would get AS5.if not then you wont benefit from a better cooler and paste.
