I'm seriously considering a switch to linux as it looks like fun 
BUT what about gaming?
What can be played on linux? Does it involve lots of emulation? WINE (which stands for WINE is not an emulator (damned recursive acronyms)) will let you run windows apps on linux boxes to varying degrees of succes...

dont do it (for gaming)!
there are emulators, and other funky programs, but they just arent good enough (as they also open source).
everyone (with sence) that uses linux, has a xp partition for games.

last I heard people were saying that source engine based games were running at least as good on linux as windows...

Can run some good games natively ie quake series, unreal tournament etc. Css and bf series needs emulation, which is more work but worth it if it all comes together. Think nvidia cards are 'usually' easier to get 3d acceleration working in linux, but never 100% definite that it will work.

I think Linux is considered competent at Open GL but not so much with the direct X. I played with Cedega for a while but is wasn't worth the effort really.
Don't let gaming be a reason not the try Linux as it excels in other areas. Just install it on an old hd and have a play.

Start up the SSH server and down puTTY, use the console from another computer, I used mine like a server that way and just done everything console (I'm still nUb), got rid of that old Linux box now though for a WGT624 Router. But I have plans
1. Build new compy.
2. Stares at wickly compy and says "Yes, you shall be my next serv0r and if you don't accept Linux this time, I shall go find my big lump of metal on a handle, yes... the SLEDGE HAMMER! BWHAHAHA!"
Something tells me it may just work.  _________________
