Want to buy an external HDD. Looking for something at about 500gb for arount the £100 mark. Was looking at this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital ... lectronics Solid make, looks pretty good. Is there any better/cheaper options that I should consider? |

I've had the 320Gb model for 4 months - so far so good. If you plan to transport a hard disk around alot I'd go for a smaller 2.5" shock resistant one. I'm happy enough with my mybook. |

You can turn most of those sort of external hard drives off, or just disconnect it. But tbh I wouldnt have thought having it connected for long times would be that much of a problem usually they're just normal hardrives in an external caddy. |

Yeah but they are normally cool with fans.. plus it would be for music and that so it would nearly always be in use. |

imo buy a caddy, then you can put any drive in it. i dont liek these fixed drive externals, as im sure it wont be long before 500Gb becomes constricting ![]() i dont know if you motherboard will support it, but i have a look at some of the e-SATA drives out there (some even come with an e-SATA expansion card), they are as fast as a internal drive, but external (and usually have usb as a backup interface) just my 2c shrek |

so it would nearly always be in use. I've had a seagate...(I think, thrown away knocked it off the desk whilst still running ![]() ![]() I like Shreks idea though a caddy sounds a good move. |

Aye, I was thinking about the caddy, but I'm just gonna go for ex-hd option for the moment. Bought the one in the original post. Cheers all. |
