Post subject:  Upgrade laptop RAM

I have a DELL Inspiron 8600 with 512 MB RAM (2 x 256), and only two slots.
I want to upgrade so I'll have at least 1 GB, but it costs me a fortune, so I need to make sure it will work.

According to Komplett
Crucial DDR SO-DIMM PC2700 1024MB CL2,5 Non-parity, 2.5V, 128M x 64, 6ns, 200p

So if I take out my two memory chips, and insert this one, can I use one of my 256 chips on the second slot? Then I'll have 1 256 MB ram? Will there be any problems with this?

im not usre of the compatibility of that laptop, but, I know that you would probably have less problems with 2 x 512s instead.

because most memory controllers have problems accessing high density sticks. I also believ that 2 x 512 would be cheaper and for the loss of not being able to use another 256, the savings would outweigh the advantage. Plus you can ebay the 2 old sticks and get a little money back. :)

Yeah, Norwegian prices I save £26 if I buy 2 x 512.
Not sure I will be able to sell the old ones, but worth a shot.

I wanted to buy a chip with 1 GB because it would be easier to upgrade later,
but I guess that next time it's due to update, this laptop will be outdated to
the stoneage, and I'll just get me a proper stationary. :D
(oooo the day :D :D )

It will take me a couple of months to get this amount saved up,
(living as a student isn't very luxurious ;) ), so perhaps I'll get more feedback
on this as well.

Thanks para, good advice
