OK, 2TB Hitachi Sata HDD is down and I need to recover the files on there (have only used about 15% of its storage, mostly Family photos in Jpeg, lots of music and a bit of video). PC won't boot with it attached and I can't reconnected whilst PC booted. Please help, desperate to recover photos. |

Quickest way is a USB adapter, connect it to another PC (unless the drive is totally knackered) |

If it won't even bios it could be power related, maybe the SATA drive has gone wrong somewhere and is trying to pull more power than the motherboard can supply. Have you tried unplugging everything including CD-rom etc. Otherwise try above. |

OK, will try. HDD gets very hot very fast. PC boots happily without this one attached and PSU is 800w. |

You might keep it cool long enough to pull the data off. As for freezer - http://lifehacker.com/5515337/save-a-failed-hard-drive-in-your-freezer-redux |

fingers cross for you rob but i dont think its a platter problem i think the electronics are f00ked on the controller one other thing if nothing else works - you could try buying the pcb on the underside of the disk, i have seen drives restored this way - online only mind. does it shudder when started like the motor is starting and a slight noice btw? |

[] also grab the ubuntu iso and burn, you have the option to 'try out' the os from the disc without the pain may need to do some reading . . . . ![]() it helped me to recover a lot of files, as the drive was visible ![]() even though windows told me it . . . . ![]() one more thing though . . . . ![]() . . . . . . . . . nah I've forgotten it [] |

You could hand it over to a monkey too...chances are almost as good that he'll recover your data. ![]() |

Typing this from my phone, as pc is busily transferring photos from frozen hdd and is being cooled by every desk fan in house as well as every spare case fan lying around. so far so good, pc booted and recognised hdd...will be backing up files til it fails again, then back to the fridge it will go... Profound thanks to all |
