when the power supply is turned on ...the PSU sounds like it is whistling really loudly...it is highly annoying.. (you can hear it even when the PC is turned off but the PSU is switched on) - the noise disappears when i flick the switch at the back of the PSU. I think i have had it at least about 4-5 years... its the antec sonata II case that came with the antec 450 watt psu.... rest of my spec is pretty shit ABIT KN9SLI (Am2 socket) sata II hard drive 250gb amd 3800+ (2.4ghz - 1 processor) (AM2 socket) 2gb corsair ddr2 ram nvidia 9500gt If it is faulty I need to get it replaced. Is it pretty conclusive or can it be dust? When i got the case, the psu was already built into it, if i buy a new PSU will I get all the wires already plugged into it ready to be plugged into my motherboard or will i need to mess around? Recommend me a PSU. Do you think it would be worth upgrading the PSU to something much more powerful in anticipation of a future upgrade like new processor / graphics card and maybe ram? I'm not too bothered about PC gaming as I have a Ps3 for now...... |

As my psu was out of warranty, i took the cover off and gave it a bloody good cleaning, runs much quieter now. |

Its more than likely the transformer. The on off cycles, heating and cooling of the computer has caused some of the coils to come loose from the core and they are vibrating at 50hz, mains frequenzy. As you get older your the range of frequenzies you can hear reduces which is probably why your dad can't hear it. The other cause is one of the capacitors has gone faulty causing it or the the transformer to whine. A few years ago some of the older Antec models had issues with cheap components due to them cutting costs, I think they learn't from that mistake as they seem okay now. It may not be causing any power issues but I'd still recommend a getting a new one as its more than likely on its way out. I do take it you have the system plugged into a decent surge protector? |

i reckon it would be the surging just recently that caused it to break... Do those surge protectors actually work as an extension socket aswell? I'm just going to get one from PC world tomorrow,10% discount + £20 gift card.. = £25 off less to spend  = £25 of my own money.

They might not protect you from a direct lightning strike but spikes in the voltage they will send to earth and prevent extra wear and tear on the power supply components. Even more important if you've got a cheap power supply. Good thing you have chosen the legal profession. In my experience people with a law degree struggle with simple math.... I don't count myself ofc  You will find that you spend £33.99 of your own money (if the info above is correct). Plus I would usually count a gift card as my own money (unless given to you by the store with no obligations/reasons - but usually gift cards are from family/friends and replace real money or other gifts). As you probably know a gift become your property after accepted - therefor another reason to call it your own money (but I get your view)  .... anyway thats just my 99 P of thoughts this morning. *Ducks and runs zig-zag to avoid being hit by the old PSU*

i just seem to remember paying £33 ... maybe i paid more... I wasn't actually calculating maths then lol, just going from memory. My basic maths ain't actually bad, I had to do accountancy as part of the legal practice course... I can draw up business accounts and draw up ledgers... I just can't do anything technical... I can also calculate corporation tax and income tax, etc.. |
