hey guys I was wondering if any of you were able to shed any light on a problem im having with my dvd drive Ive had several problems with it in the past, often fails to burn successfuly and used to be really slow, also on occasion its just not in my computer and i have to reset a few times for my laptop to actually pick it up. On one of these occassions i had 2 virtual drives running and it has now renamed itself to g:/ (i dont know if this has anything to do with my new problem, but i figured it may be relevant) Now my drive is unable to play actual video dvds. by this i mean movie dvds that ive bought. it can still read data dvds and cds fine. ive attempted to research this problem but havent really come up with anything. ive read that often when a drive can no longer read dvds it is because one of the lasers isnt working properly, but mine can still read data dvds not im not sure if this is really applicable any help would be much appreciated thanks in advance |

its not even the playing of the dvds that is the issue, my computer just refuses to see them. it just asks me to insert a disc if i double click on the drive. i used deamon tools to create the virtual drives, i havent had problems with it before, but they are also now disabled. its quite a peculiar problem... |

hmm, i havent really got a definitve answer ![]() im guessing its a setting in the virtual drive software, perhaps reset it to default ![]() after that, i would be tempted to uninstall the software & reboot, if that doesnt work i would then delete the drive(s) in device manager and reboot Dr.Strangelove - full of reboot goodness ![]() ps whats changes have you done, for this to happen? added more software etc etc? |

appreciate the replies guys. tried getting rid of deamon tools didnt do anything. uninstalled the drive, didnt help. im unaware of any changes really that could have caused this. i dont remember the last time i actually tried to play a dvd on my laptop so i have no point of reference at all i googled registry keys issues with this drive and i found suggestions to delete the upper and lower values in a certain directory....i dont have those categories at all. i double and tripple checked i was in the right place etc. but they werent there. its a laptop so bit of a bitch to actually unplug the drive...there a high chance thatll work since nothing else does? |

actually, unplugging a dvd drive on a laptop is usually rather easy (or it used to be on older ones) on my old one there was just a single screw on the bottom that held the drive in place, if you unscrewed that you could pull it out like you would on a regular desktop ![]() |

have a go at cleaning the lens of the dvd with either a cotton bud (providing you can actually see the bugger) or a dvd\cd lens cleaning disc |

hmm well try both those options tomorrow when i go home. dont have a screw driver small enough here and have cleaning discs there. i hope the problem is as easily solved as that... |
