For some bizarre reason, my left speaker is a helluva lot more bassy than t'other one.
Is this normal?

What kind of Music system you got? Sounds like the bass is out of balance...but it depends how advanced your stereo is in way of options.

Very old AIWA system. Speakers arn't AIWA though.
In terms of options, there's the bass, treble, balance, loudness...
Nothing wrong with those.
When I move the balance to the left speaker it sounds as if its coming through a radio - slightly crackly, poor quality. I move it to the right and it's fine apart from little or no bass.

try the speakers from a different source, and differnt speakers on the first source...
also try different wires if poss

it is normal but the higher you go in terms of hifi this changes and the tonal balance is improved
