gents im to go in to a meeting tomorrow at 1500 to discuss the companys back up solutions at the moment we are backing up to a tape drive each night apx 130gig of data this is taking between 7 & 13 hours [to slow] this software is veritas there is talk of a software solution running constantly that backs up countinually but is very expensive ... are there any cheep solutions that are fool proof ... our network runs over 4 bldgs so a computer could be housed well away from the computer room that the backups could be held on |

what he said ^^ a £750 tape drive should be able to store that much data in under 10 minutes. Then again, you need to have decent switches between your servers, newer backup software.... if it says Veritas, then it's quite old. You can do disk to disk backups to a remote server pretty easily - you would still want to copy this to tape regularly though. |

Aye, what they said - disk to disk, then backup up that central repository to tape. If your backups are on another disk you can restore exceedingly quickly. Your servers should have plenty of bandwidth, with their own dedicated fibre backbone, running at absolutely no less than 1Gbit. You should take this opportunity to look at disaster recovery plans; if you have one review it, if not write one a.s.a.p.! If you're doing an incremental backup Mon - Thurs and a full on the Friday, you should consider things like storing the Friday tapes offsite in case there's a major incident at work (flood, fire, structural damage, etc.). |

wow .... ok we run 5 x servers, atm the tapes are removed daily ... ive only just been invited to help so deep end really this is a quote from our excising software support comp I enclose some information to discuss at our meeting tomorrow. In the exiting Poweredge 2600 server, you are currently running a Dat 36/72Gb back up drive. Dell now offers an internal 400/800Gb LTO drive which I have priced separately below. They do not offer anything smaller other than a newer version of the Dat drive you are already using. Internal LTO 400/800Gb drive £1360 400Gb tapes £29 each An alternative to tape back up is a CDP unit. This device allows for real time second by second back up of your network without any user intervention or the need for tapes. It also has the feature of being able to send data off site electronically with the addition of some software and remote storage costs. I enclose a brochure which outlines the feature of a CDP back up solution. Sonicwall 2440i 250/300GB £1640 Sonicwall CDP silver support £355 (next day replacement on site / software updates) Site to site license back up license £285 Off site back up monthly fee : 10Gb £30 20Gb £40 30Gb £50 40Gb £60 50Gb £70 60Gb £80 70Gb £90 100Gb £100 Installation, to include set up of remote data storage £250 All prices exclude Vat. |

your Veritas *should* do a disk to disk backup as it is, you just define a folder on a disk as being a D2D backup device, and point your daily backups to that. 1GB ethernet is fine, any reasonable backup software will compress the data between machines. Its probably worth upgrading the Backup Exec to the current version as it will bring some nice new features, like encypting the backup tapes (always goes down well with the boss) faster SQL/Exchange backup etc etc etc |

Gents in veritas it says 111gig of data ... is this the actual size of the data to be compressed or is the data compressed already? http://uploads.gamecommunity.co.uk/file ... 730004.jpg is veritas easy to use? is veritas easy to upgrade ourselfs or do we need IT company to do it for us Ive been quoted 300 for upgrade to latest version will just upgrading the version to the latest make the back up quicker or do we have to set up a D2D drive /new tape drive to make it quicker is backup exex one of the best back up software? what alternatives are there so many questions ...... |

Post subject: | Re: server back up |
Thats uncompressed data Pay them to do the upgrade, I'm certain you need to totally uninstall the agents and backup software itself due to the large difference in versions between the old and new. It may only make it a tiny bit faster, the underlying slow bit will be your backup hardware. Arcserve - very similar to Backup Exec, both in features and cost. Novastor has similar features, but is cheaper (never used it though, but they keep trying to get me to sell it) |
