Ok well I'm starting to get some money with my new job, so I'm going to be getting new computers etc.

I'v got some basic shells of computers that only need a few £'s in them to get them working.

I'm going to get these working and start trying to learn how to use Linux etc (I'v tried some cd boot ones).

I'll be using these comps to try all sorts of things, such as running a web server/dedicated server/linux/etc etc.

Just sort of mess around and become more geeky.


So what I'm asking is...

Have you got any good advice for someone starting out with linux.
Any recommendations for types?
Web sites with tutorials/information?
Forums etc that can also help?
General things you would like to share?

I'v got a few forums and websites that I'v looked at for a while now, just to get a general grasp of what it's all about.
But then I thought it would be best to ask here as I know a few people here have a lot of knowledge and experiance working with Linux.


I'm going to be starting getting into web development etc also (again I'v dabbled) so keep an eye out in this section for more questions.

Use VMware and a linux distro to get a better feel of it, you can spend more time on it without having to boot up a cd.

Depends what youl be using linux for really.

Ive used Mandrake, Suse, Redhat and just now having a look at Ubuntu.

As for webdevelopment i use Dreamweaver, good for starting out on.

if you want to learn start from the ground up imho - that means no window interface - all cmd line
personally i like debian for servers and mandrake/ubuntu for desktops

read as much as you want but if you like me its in one eye and out the other until i start to do stuff

I found it quite easy to switch to Ubuntu from Windows. Any command line stuff you need is all over the internet so you can just copy and paste if need be.

Justlinux is a site I'v been reading, it's one of the better ones.



Yeah it's the same for me.

If I only just read stuff but don't actually do anything practical then it's useless as I don't remember it.

I was kind of stuck on whether to go purely commands based first or GUI, I'll have a try at command first.







I'll be trying a lot of diffrent versions the people have suggested, see which one I prefare to work with.

when you download the distros, use bit torrent - it will max out your connection. got 600K+ on ubuntu
